Introducing The Shackleton: the first British-made affordable banjo in over 60 years
We are making the first production banjo to be manufactured in Britain for many decades. Here's what the prototype sounds like (played here by our good friend Solomon Amos, just outside our workshop in norwich, Norfolk, UK). Solomon is being filmed here by a BBC News team for a special item about The Shackleton banjo. So we videoed him playing at the same time!
We're naming our new banjo in honour of the 2014 Centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton's heroic expedition to the Antarctic – because the banjo that Shackleton took on that trip played a vital role in his epic adventure.
We hope that you will help us to revive a Great British tradition, become a part of British banjo history, and order yourself a Shackleton Banjo!
We raised funds for The Shackleton project, and secured over a hundred advance orders, on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. That campaign was successfully concluded on October 12th, but you can see the story of the campaign on this link. And you can watch our Kickstarter video right here...
...now watch The Shackleton Banjo on Anglia TV News
Anglia TV, the ITV station for the East of England, featured The Shackleton project on its evening news show last week. It's a great little piece which we hope you will enjoy. The bright sounding banjo carrying the tune is The Shackleton itself, played by Mike King of 'Hayley Moyses & The Bluegrass Forum'.
The deeper, mellower banjo is our Islander Ash Leaf model, played by Norwich singer-songwriter Solomon Amos. And fiddle accompaniment is provided by Hayley Moyses herself. Shot right outside our workshop in the middle of the beautiful city of Norwich, Norfolk, UK. Thank you to all involved, including Natalie Gray at Anglia TV!

We are in the new era. An era when the magic of the banjo is attracting more players than ever before. Regardless of age, musical influences, experience or ability. The banjo isn't restricted anymore to Bluegrass, or to Old-Time, or even to folk or country. Now the banjo has a growing role in every kind of music, and more and more people are enjoying the banjo and its unique voice.
The banjo is easy to begin playing, very forgiving of learner's mistakes and early fumblings, fulfilling from the first time you play it, and thrillingly satisfying as you become more accomplished. And that applies whether you want to play 5-string banjo or 4-string, or even 6-string guitar-banjo (banjitar). And whether you want the unique sound of resonator banjo or openback banjo.
What we have here is a movement: a movement of people of all ages and backgrounds falling in love with the banjo and tearing down all the old prejudices, stereotypes and silly myths. The banjo is for everyone, and it seems that everyone is catching on!
At Banjos Direct we are proud to be leading this movement, in part by offering practical support to the worldwide banjo movement. We have, for example, become key sponsors and Associate Producers of the wonderful new feature length documentary The Porchlight Sessions, from which you can see an inspiring clip right here.

Join the global banjo movement today...
It doesn't matter whether you want to play like Earl Scruggs or Bela Fleck, or like Steve Martin, or to sound like Mumford & Sons, Abigail Washburn, or anybody else. It doesn't matter whether you want to play Bluegrass, Old-Time, folk, country, jazz, rock or pop. It doesn't matter if you're 15, 25, 55 or 85! It doesn't matter if you want to play alone, or with friends, or in sessions, or to form a band. There are no rules and no restrictions.
And it doesn't matter if you have no musical knowledge at all, or if you've never even picked up a banjo or any other instrument. Heck, it doesn't matter if you don't yet know Bluegrass from green grass. What matters is you want to play the banjo. So, welcome to the new era of the banjo. You're part of a worldwide musical movement, and that's a life enhancing thing to be!
